Teamcenter on Cloud

Teamcenter on Cloud

Cloud is the future whether we accept it or not. On-premises products are not developing further and getting less secure and eventually will be obsolete while everything is built for the cloud. Teamcenter or PLM is not an exception and it’s time to start planning for the transition. At PLM Nordic, we have a dedicated team with expertise on cloud-based PLM implementation or transition. We are authorised Siemens Solution and Channel Partner and have advised and implemented cloud based Teamcenter projects at multiple customer locations.

When it comes to Teamcenter there are two options to adopt cloud:

1. Infrastructure as a service

Move/Host your existing Teamcenter servers on the cloud.

2. Software as a service

Implement/Migrate to Teamcenter X.

1. Infrastructure as a service: Move TC on Cloud

In this option, you are moving your Teamcenter Infrastructure to Cloud. It does not affect your existing configuration or customizations and end-users do not notice any change in the front end. In this option either all or selected Teamcenter servers are hosted on cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), etc. The initial sizing and settings for servers on the cloud are important to get desired performance. We have a competent team available to help you choose and implement this option. There are other choices to make like database as a service vs hosting database on the server, initial size, move volume or not, datacenter location etc.

Advantages:

  1. No change in your Teamcenter solution, appearance to the user, and functionalities.
  2. Lead time for setting up new servers is down from months to minutes.
  3. Cloud-based servers offer more flexibility to upscale and downscale as per load quickly.
  4. Cloud-based servers offer more security as it is managed by a cloud provider with the best available technology.
  5. Hosting can be done at preferred datacentre across the globe. Good for companies with a distributed workforce across the globe.
  6. Solutions are available for mission-critical or sensitive datacenter requirements like Gov cloud.
  7. New developments in cloud - new features every day because of huge investment by service providers vs no investment in traditional in-house infrastructure.
  8. Hybrid option available when you do not want to move all data to the cloud. Keep files or vaults in-house.

2. Software as a service: Teamcenter X

Teamcenter X is a full fledged Cloud Software as a Service platform from Siemens. It is hosted and maintained by Siemens. You can pay as you go and can instantly login to pre-built configuration. All the operations and maintenance for Teamcenter X, including upgrades to keep you running with all the latest software enhancements, are managed by Siemens.

Advantages:

  1. No need to maintain Teamcenter environment. Siemens will maintain, upgrade and manage the software.
  2. Fast implementation and adaption with preconfigured configurations.
  3. Any time anywhere access.
  4. Low first-time investment and ownership cost.
  5. Lower cost of consulting.

FAQ

What is Teamcenter on Cloud?

Teamcenter on cloud is nothing but using the underlying infrastructure on the cloud instead of traditional in-house. It can be using cloud servers to host Teamcenter also called Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) or using Teamcenter X which is a more full-fledged Software as a service (SaaS) software.

How much it costs to go on cloud?

The cloud cost model is different from the traditional model. It has monthly or recurring costs compared to one-time costs with purchasing hardware and software. Actual costs depend on your capacity, security, availability, and performance needs.

Is Teamcenter X costly?

Teamcenter X follows a different cost model. You cannot compare it directly with licensing cost of the existing Teamcenter. Teamcenter X avoids a lot of long-term maintenance, upgrades, infrastructure, and consulting costs. It’s a good option for those e companies who do not want to invest heavily upfront and need quick implementation.

Is my data safe on cloud servers?

You like it or not already cloud is the future. The world is moving towards hosting data on third-party cloud providers. The security mechanisms at these providers are much better than in-house because of huge investment and up-to-date technology. Already a lot of data is already on a cloud when you use email, chat, or other software.

What is AWS GovCloud (US)

AWS GovCloud (US) is the cloud solution specifically designed for US government customers and their partners. It gives them the flexibility to architect secure cloud solutions that comply with the FedRAMP High baseline; the DOJ’s Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Security Policy; U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR); Export Administration Regulations (EAR); Department of Defense (DoD) Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide (SRG) for Impact Levels 2, 4 and 5; FIPS 140-2; IRS-1075; and other compliance regimes.

Why should I keep my data outside company?

Cloud is more secured than you think as it is a shared datacenter with more resources to support and maintain.

Simple analogy is: Is your money safe at home or at Bank which had dedicated security and processes to protect your money. Same is happening with data now.

With increased cyber crimes in-house systems are more vulnerable than ever. All hardware and software needs to be up-to-date at all time to protect against hacks.

Moreover, if you do not want to host your files on cloud like (drawings, document, cad models) you can still keep vault server in-house and move rest to cloud.

How do I size my cloud servers?

Siemens has given comprehensive guidelines and test results for cloud based usage which can be used to calculate size of cloud components. Also you need to do trials on your data, configuration to check performance on test severs before finalizing production size. General rule is start with minimum and then increase gradually as you need. That’s the beauty of cloud based implementations that you do not get struck with hardware. We have helped several customers and their IT departments to size the Teamcenter cloud based servers correctly.
